1. Would you like to be invisible? Perhaps you would when your teacher is asking for your homework. Believe it or not but being invisible is becoming a reality. The so-called invisibility coat is the invention of a Japanese professor at Tokyo University. Though you can see through this coat, it doesn’t really make you invisible. The Japanese scientist wants to make people completely transparent some day.
2. Lots of money in many countries is spent on space exploration. But is it really that important? Some people say “yes” and add that we need to find more about the universe we live in. Such individuals want more discoveries in order to improve our world. Their opponents are sure that the money for space exploration should be spent on looking after this planet as this is the one we live on, for example on stopping poverty or curing fatal illnesses.
3. The Internet is definitely one of the most important discoveries of the previous century. You find some incredible things when you are surfing. If you collect photos of film stars, study history or other subject, the Internet is for you. You can always find groups of people somewhere in the world with the same interests or hobbies. The Internet can offer a boundless amount of wonderful things. And there is no government control or censorship because both are almost impossible.
4. Every year we hear more stories about crazy weather. And it really seems that strange weather is becoming typical of many places on our planet. Thus thousands of people become homeless and some of them may die in European countries due to floods. People have to leave their homes in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Slovenia. And tornadoes have also become a threat to Europe. For instance, nowadays England has about 30 tornadoes a year.
5. Text-messaging is essential for most teens in Britain. The British send more than 24 million text messages every day and those who are under 25 years old send most of the messages. For many schools mobile phones are a pain in the neck. They cause problems in lessons. Some schools ban mobile phones, some fine the owners of phones that ring or beep during lessons. But text-messaging or texting is cheaper and more private than making calls so it is likely to go on.
6. Scientists are learning more than ever about the Moon. Astronauts have travelled to the Moon. They have brought back information that helps us to understand the Moon better. Although our knowledge about the Moon has grown, the Moon itself has remained unchanged. The Moon lights up the night. It makes the sky beautiful. It makes people stop, look and wonder. The Moon was formed billions of years ago. In those days space was full of dust and rocks. No one is sure just how these came together to form the Earth. Perhaps when the Earth was first formed, a part of it broke loose and became the Moon. But scientists are not sure. There are so many questions about the satellite of the Earth that have no answers so far.
7. The journal Science has published Mr Graddol’s predictions concerning the development of English as a global language. According to this language expert by 2050 more people will speak Chinese, Hindu or Arabic as their first language than English. In 1995, English was second only to Chinese as the most common language in the world, in terms of native speakers. But, it would probably fall in importance within the next 50 years. Chinese, Mr Graddol says, will still dominate with 166 million native speakers. However, the next most-spoken language will be Hindu (73,7 mln), followed by Arabic (72,2 mln). The number of native English speakers aged 15 to 24 is expected to be 65 million.
