66. Work in pairs. Imagine that one of you is planning to leave town for the country and the other, on the contrary, is going to move to a big city. Talk to each other and try to convince your partner that he or she is making a mistake.

Writing to give arguments

When people write essays explaining their opinion of some fact they often regard it from different angles and offer their praise or criticism, in other words, they give their arguments for or against it.

When you write an argumentative essay you should find some arguments for and some arguments against the problem under discussion. In your final paragraph you write your “verdict” — what you really think of the problem. Sometimes you support just one point of view. Sometimes you decide that the opposite opinion could be accepted. But very often people have mixed feelings about various situations or facts. Whatever your final solution is you should write it in the last paragraph of your essay. Thus the body of an argumentative essay should have four parts:

I. Introduction

II. Arguments for the point under discussion

III. Arguments against it

IV. Conclusion

Suppose, your task is to write an essay on the following: “Computers were invented in the middle of the 20th century. Since then some people think they are a blessing while others do not approve of their extensive usage.”

I. In the introduction you broaden the statement and stress the fact that there are two points of view on the computers.

II. In the second part you enumerate the positive sides of this phenomenon. You mention, for example, that people have an easy access to a lot of information, they can do the shopping from home, can have some medical advice, etc.

III. In the third part of the essay you may write that due to computers people do not socialize, they may get eye diseases, headaches, insomnia, etc.

IV. The final part of the essay will be a certain summing up of your analysis, a conclusion with your opinion.

66. Работайте в парах. Представьте, что один из вас планирует уехать из города в деревню, а другой, наоборот, собирается переехать в большой город. Поговорите друг с другом и попытайтесь убедить своего партнера, что он или она совершает ошибку.

Ответ:

A: Hey, guess what? I'm planning to move to the countryside!

(А: Привет, знаешь что? Я планирую переехать в деревню!)

B: To the countryside? Are you kidding me? I'm actually moving to a big city. I think you are making a huge mistake. The country is so boring.

(Б: В деревню? Ты шутишь? А я вот переезжаю в большой город. Мне кажется, ты совершаешь огромную ошибку. В деревне так скучно.)

A: Boring? No way! It's peaceful. I'm tired of all the noise and traffic here. In the country, there's fresh air, beautiful nature... It's a much healthier lifestyle. Why would you want to live in a crowded, noisy city?

(А: Скучно? Ни в коем случае! Там спокойно. Я устал от всего этого шума и пробок. В деревне свежий воздух, красивая природа... Это гораздо более здоровый образ жизни. Зачем тебе жить в переполненном, шумном городе?)

B: Because that's where everything happens! In a big city, there are endless opportunities for a good job and education. There are cinemas, theatres, museums, and cool concerts. What will you do in the country? Watch the grass grow?

(Б: Потому что там все и происходит! В большом городе бесконечные возможности для хорошей работы и образования. Там есть кинотеатры, театры, музеи и крутые концерты. А что ты будешь делать в деревне? Смотреть, как трава растет?)

A: I'll enjoy a calm and stress-free life. People in villages are friendlier, you know your neighbours. In a city, you're just a stranger in a crowd. Besides, living in a city is incredibly expensive.

(А: Я буду наслаждаться спокойной жизнью без стресса. Люди в деревнях более дружелюбные, ты знаешь своих соседей. В городе ты просто незнакомец в толпе. Кроме того, жизнь в городе невероятно дорогая.)

B: But you get what you pay for! Great public transport, thousands of shops, better hospitals. You'll probably need a car for everything in the countryside. I really think you should reconsider. City life is much better.

(Б: Но ты получаешь то, за что платишь! Отличный общественный транспорт, тысячи магазинов, больницы лучше. В деревне тебе, скорее всего, для всего понадобится машина. Я правда думаю, что тебе стоит передумать. Жизнь в городе намного лучше.)

A: And I think you're wrong. I'd rather have peace and quiet than all that city chaos. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

(А: А я думаю, что ты неправ. Я лучше выберу тишину и покой, чем весь этот городской хаос. Полагаю, нам просто придется остаться при своих мнениях.)
