The Favourite

In the film

In The Favourite, Queen Anne has 17 pet rabbits which represent the 17 children she lost.

The facts

Queen Anne (1665-1714) really did lose 17 children, either during pregnancy or at a very young age. Only one of her children, Prince William, lived beyond the age of two, though he died aged 11. However, the rabbits are an invention of the film's director, Yorgos Lanthimos. In the 18th century, rabbits were viewed either as agricultural pests, or food, and would never have been kept as pets.

Victoria and Abdul

In the film

In Victoria and Abdul, the servant Abdul teaches Queen Victoria Hindustani.

The facts

Queen Victoria (1819-1901) was also Empress of India, and was fascinated by the country. She employed Indian servants in the Royal Household, though many people did not approve, and Abdul Karim was the first. They became very close friends and he taught her both Urdu and Hindustani, which Victoria said 'interests me very much.'

Mary Queen of Scots

In the film

In Mary Queen of Scots, there is a dramatic meeting between Mary and Queen Elizabeth I.

The facts

The relationship between Mary (1542-1587, Queen of Scotland) and Elizabeth (1533-1603, Queen of England) dominated the politics of the two countries for 20 years. Some people believed that Mary should have been queen of both countries, and the two were great rivals. The meeting between them is the dramatic heart of the film. However, although the two Queens wrote many letters to each other, they never actually met.

The Crown

In the series

In The Crown, Jackie Kennedy, the US President's wife, criticizes the Queen after a dinner at Buckingham Palace.

The facts

John and Jackie Kennedy were invited to Buckingham Palace for a formal dinner during their first UK visit in 1961. After the dinner, Jackie was reported as saying that the Queen was 'pretty heavy going' and that Buckingham Palace was 'like a provincial hotel'. Later in the episode, Jackie goes to visit the Queen on her own and apologizes. It is true that she had a one-to-one meeting with the Queen nine months after the original meeting, but nobody knows if she actually apologized, and it seems likely that the Netflix series allowed itself some dramatic licence.
