Russia's 'Bear Man'

Nikita Ovsyannikov has a special relationship with polar bears. He has spent many years observing these magnificent creatures in their Arctic habitat, sometimes very close by. As deputy director of a polar bear reserve on Wrangel Island, Ovsyannikov’s aim is to protect the bears from extinction. With nothing more than a big stick and lots of bravery as protection, he has encountered more than 500 polar bears. It is through this intimate contact that he has learned about their calm and often curious nature. He has earned the reputation among his colleagues of being the ‘bear man’.

Ovsyannikov began working with polar bears in 1990, when he and a cameraman moved to the island to monitor the bears. On that very first night, the bears gave them a welcome no one could forget – dozens of them approached the cabin to investigate the newcomers. They looked into the cabin, knocked on the windows and smelled the area with great intensity. It was a rare occasion for the bears, as few people travel into this region. Most of the time, they are on the ice blocks floating in the ocean. In fact, their bodies are perfect for ice fishing, with razor-sharp claws and powerful arms that can lift heavy meals from the water in seconds.

Today, the polar bears face threats. Due to global warming, the ice in the Arctic Ocean shrank by 18 per cent between 2007 and 2012. As it melts, the bears lose their ability to hunt properly. They have begun to search for food on land in areas further south. This has put them in contact with humans more frequently. In addition, humans have been killing the bears for their fur. Sadly, Ovsyannikov believes that the bears could disappear completely in just 25 years. But he is not willing to give up on their survival. He mentions examples of how protection laws can work, such as in Alaska, where bear populations are growing due to hunting bans.

Ovsyannikov hopes that the bears can adjust to their changing environment, and that hunters will change their attitudes about the bears. He says ‘From my experience, the polar bear is such a calm and curious creature that there can be nothing exciting about hunting it.’
