In Britain, many sites of historical interest offer educational programmes that include historical re-enactments to encourage young people to take more of an interest in their history and heritage.

I think young people should be encouraged to go to historical re-enactments because they really help bring history to life.

I disagree. I don't think that watching people in historical costumes makes history more interesting or accessible to young people. You don't have to see people dressed up to understand historical facts.

Historical re-enactments

Warwick Castle is one of the best places in England to really experience history. The 1,000-year-old castle has survived through the centuries and understanding what life in the castle was like at different times in the past is now easy. Actors dressed in historical costumes re-enact the daily life and historical events that took place there. There is the opportunity to experience a medieval battlefield and see real medieval war machinery. You can even watch brave knights competing in battles for the love of a beautiful princess. You can join a medieval banquet in the Great Hall and experience the true flavours of the medieval kitchen.

Educational programmes

School visits to places of historical interest have been part of school life in Britain for years, but a lot of sites are now offering special educational sessions to schools. These sessions are linked to the school curriculum and increase students' understanding of history. Students can participate in activities such as preparing food for a 16th century meal, spending the day with a medieval knight or even spending a day at a typical 19th century school. Educational experts believe that students respond better to this 'hands-on' approach to studying history and that they will be more motivated to learn if they can experience history for themselves.
