Did they really know?

Finding the truth about our ancient history has always been a fascinating goal for scientists. Also it has caused lots of debate and arguments. Some followers of alternative science believe that our ancestors’ knowledge of technology was more advanced than it is described in our schoolbooks. Many of such theories have rather weak foundation. However, the supposition that ancient Egyptians knew about and used electricity seems to rest on a more serious basis.

The evidence for this theory was found in 1936 in today’s Iraq, a few hundred kilometres from Egypt. It was strange pots, which had copper cylinders inside, glued into the opening with asphalt. The archaeologists thought that they were galvanic elements or primitive batteries. The reconstruction was done and it proved that it was possible to create electricity with them.

Another piece of proof comes from something that is missing. This element is soot, which is a black substance, produced by burning something, for example, coal or wood. It wasn’t found in any of the underground tombs and pyramids. The presence of colourful paintings on the walls makes it even more puzzling. If ancient Egyptians had used candles or oil lamps, they would have left soot on the ceilings of the rooms. So how did they get their light?

Some scientists made an outstanding discovery. In the temple at Dendera, north of Luxor, a Norwegian engineer noticed a drawing on the wall that looked like a lamp. Another scientist from Austria was able to build a working model and two other well-known scientists worked out a theory based on this image. The device is obviously a lamp. It has two arms reaching into it at its thick end and a kind of cable on the other end. A snake is jumping out of it to touch the arms on the other side.

Of course, such theories shouldn’t be treated as ‘truth’, but rather as a perspective for further exploration. There are still lots of questions to answer. Did the ancient Egyptians really know about electricity? If yes, where did they learn about it from? Did anyone help them or was it their own invention?
