Piracy in the 21^st century

Would you ever rob a bank, mug someone on the street or shoplift? If your answer is no, then you probably think you are an honest person who is not capable of committing a crime. But, if you have a computer at home, maybe you have already committed one without realising it. What crime have you probably committed? The answer is piracy.

When most people think of piracy, they think of pirates on a ship like the Peter Pan character, Captain Hook or Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. Images of skull and crossbones, parrots, a peg leg, a hook or an eye patch may all come to mind. But in the 21^st century, piracy has taken on a new meaning.

Piracy on the Internet, such as downloading software, songs, movies or even games without paying for them, is very common. Software, movie and music industries lose billions of pounds every year as a result of piracy. But it's not just downloading from the Internet that is the problem. Even copying people like me – the average person who doesn’t have loads to spend on computer software’.

Pete Robinson, a 24-year-old shop assistant says, ‘On my salary, I could not afford to buy all the music and see all the films I’d like to see. I download movies, which I later watch with my friends. It’s a great opportunity to entertain ourselves on very little money’.

There is no doubt that the 21^st century has brought a media and electronic revolution. The technology we use to copy CDs and DVDs and to download things from the Internet is a very new thing. Our laws are having trouble keeping up with all the issues and problems that all this free information is causing. With so many people doing it, piracy over the Internet may be impossible to stop. So, the question is, do we allow people to take advantage of all the free software and entertainment or do we spend billions trying to stop it?

a music CD or a DVD to keep or give to a friend is actually illegal. It’s surprising to hear, as most of us at some point in our lives have done one of these things. But is it so serious that it should be considered a crime? We asked a number of people on the street what they thought. Here’s what they had to say:

Ian Smith, a 15-year-old high school student, says, ‘Am I really guilty of a criminal act? I only recently started downloading from the Internet. I found out that a lot of my classmates had been downloading stuff for free for ages. So now I do, too. It’s just like file sharing, isn’t it? It’s brilliant that there are so many free forms of entertainment available on the Internet. I don’t get much pocket money. It’s hard to imagine something so normal being wrong.’

Tricia Green, a 19-year-old university student thinks it’s a necessity. ‘I definitely couldn’t pay for all the software I need; it’s really pricey and as a student, I can’t afford it. I think it’s a good thing; especially for
