The never-ending story.

Recently, the legendary film director Stephen Spielberg complained that people had forgotten how to tell stories.

Of course, he was referring to Hollywood filmmakers, rather than people in general, but he's not the only one who's worried about the health of our interest in fiction.

Teachers and other experts have also complained that young people don't read as much as they used to, and it's not hard to guess what they think the problem is. Modern technology.

Spielberg's concern is that modern films and stories don't have a middle or an end anymore.

Many media analysts agree. They believe that the mobile phone and internet generation's attention span is now too short for complex story lines.

The result, they say, is predictable plots with a beginning that never stops beginning.

In response, the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT, has recently created the Center for Future Storytelling to rethink what storytelling will be in the twenty-first century, develop a new narrative language that is a combination of digital applications, and investigate how it could revive our interest in stories.

While the MIT is concerned that we've lost our interest in stories, many educationalists worry that the internet has created a population of impatient information seekers, rather than real readers.

According to their argument, before the internet, people had always learned to enjoy narrative by reading good books.

However, recent research indicates that the number of books we read each year is declining.

Other people, however, are less pessimistic.

We still read, they say, but we do it online these days.

Also, our interest in traditional myths and legends is far from dead, just look at the content of video games.

Video game authors have used both mythical tales and modern fiction to create the heroic story lines of blockbuster games like God of War and the Halo series.

Different genres, similar to those of literature, have begun to emerge too, with fantasy, science fiction, and horror being the most popular among the games.

Perhaps the only thing that people can agree on is that the medium through which we tell and enjoy stories is changing.

However, far from believing there is a lack of interest in narrative among present generations, authors of video games think people are more hungry than ever for good content.

As Dennis Dyer of Silicon Knights, a successful games company has said, it's all about who can tell the best stories.
