Host: Welcome to Sports Hour. Today we have Tina Forbes, who has written a book about how extreme sports can encourage teenagers to exercise more. Tina, welcome to the show.

Tina: Thanks.

Host: Tina, you have a gold medal in snowboarding from the X-Games. But some of our listeners may not be familiar with what they are. Can you tell us a bit about them?

Tina: Sure. The X-Games started in California. They're a bit like the Olympics, but the sports are very different.

Host: What kinds of sports are X-sports?

Tina: BMX biking, skateboarding, snowboarding. The kind of sports that kids and young people enjoy.

Host: Extreme sports.

Tina: Yes.

Host: But aren't they dangerous? Don't you need a lot of experience or lessons first?

Tina: Well, the main thing is that you need to have a sense of balance and some coordination. But anyone can develop these with practice.

Host: Okay, Tina. So, why do these sports fascinate young people and kids so much?

Tina: That's easy. The sports in the X-Games are fast, fun to watch, but most importantly, they come from the street. They're what teenagers see around them.

Host: What? Snowboarding and surfing?

Tina: Okay. Snowboarding and surfing didn't come from the street. But as with the rest of the sports in the X-Games, they were invented by teenagers and young people. They are their sports.

Host: Interesting. So, how can these sports help teenagers to exercise more?

Tina: Well, exercising without a reason can be boring. Exercising to do extreme sports, on the other hand, is incredibly motivating.

Host: Sure, but most teenagers will never go to California to compete in the X-Games. And most don't have snow around them.

Tina: No, but there are X-Game events in most European countries and cities every year. Madrid, London, and Milan all have big X-Game competitions. And the sports are things like mountain biking, street boarding, skateboarding.

Host: And apart from motivation, what are the benefits of preparing to take part in an X-Game sport?

Tina: These are fun but competitive events. Teenagers need to build up their stamina and muscle tone by following the exercise regime in my book. As soon as they start doing this, some teenagers notice other benefits like losing weight.

Host: Yes. I imagine if your balance is not very good, you could hurt yourself.

Tina: Yes, but safety instruction is a big part of my book.
