Marcus: So you see, at the end of every party, I find myself alone in the kitchen.

Marcus: Is it because my conversation is just too boring?

Woman: Well, it sounds like you're making a classic mistake there, Marcus. You don't have to be interesting to be a social success.

Marcus: Really?

Woman: No, not at all. But you've got to make it easy for other people to make conversation with you.

Woman: When you meet somebody for the first time, you should introduce yourself first, you know, your name, where you come from, what you do, who else you know at the party.

Woman: When you do that, it's much easier to start a conversation about something that's interesting for both of you.

Woman: If you don't, there's the danger that you'll both talk about how tasty the salad is or something.

Marcus: Right.

Woman: And when you meet someone, it's worth trying to memorize at least one detail about them.

Woman: Obviously their name, but also the name of their boyfriend, or girlfriend, or children.

Woman: Or, you know, their favourite football team, where they usually go on holiday.

Woman: Then, if you see them again, it'll be so much easier to start chatting.

Woman: You might find it useful to make notes on little cards where you write down what you remember about people after a party.

Woman: And then before the next party, you can read your notes again.

Marcus: Hmm.

Marcus: I'm not so sure about that idea.

Marcus: It seems a bit strange, sort of thing a spy would do.

Woman: Well, Marcus, a lot of my clients say it helps them.

Woman: And then there are certain topics that everyone talks about.

Woman: Sport.

Woman: The latest popular films or TV programs or music.

Woman: So I think you ought to make more of an effort to keep up to date with what's going on.

Marcus: Well, I don't know very much about films.

Marcus: I never have time to see any.

Woman: So, Marcus, you'd better start reading a few film reviews at least.

Woman: Also, it's really important to look as relaxed as you can when you meet people.

Woman: Remember to smile a lot and speak in a clear, confident voice.

Woman: That it's coming from your stomach and not your throat.

Marcus: Oh, you mean like this?

Woman: Yes, basically.

Woman: You know, Marcus, you've got a lovely sense of humour.

Woman: Why don't you just be yourself?
