Playing the Bagpipes

In his famous book Three Men in a Boat we can read a funny episode written in Jerome’s usual e___ ¹ manner. In it the author tells a story of a young man who was studying to play the bag-pipes and found his family r___ ² his new hobby and was very much a___ ³ by it.

At first the young man used to get up early in the morning to practise, but he had to give that plan up, because of his sister. She was a believer, and she said with i___ ⁴ that it seemed such an awful thing to begin the day like that: the sounds of the bagpipes i___ ⁵ her religious feelings.

So he sat up at night instead and played after the family had gone to bed, but that did not do, as it got the house such a bad name. People, going home late, would stop outside to listen, and then gossip all over the town, the next morning, that a fearful murder had been committed at Mr Jefferson’s the night before; and would describe how they had heard the victim’s shrieks and the r___ ⁶ voice of the f___ ⁷ murderer cursing and s___ ⁸, which was followed by the prayer for mercy, and the least dying gurgle of the corpse.

Then they knocked up a little place for him at the bottom of the garden b___ ⁹ the yew trees and made him take the instrument down there when he wanted to play it; and sometimes a visitor would come to the house who knew nothing of the matter, and they would forget to tell him about it, and caution him, and he would go out for a stroll round the garden and i___ ¹⁰ hear the bagpipes h___ ¹¹ a high note without being prepared for it, or being i___ ¹² of what it was.
