10 tips for long-distance relationships

We asked our online community to send us their top tips for surviving long-distance relationships. Here are some of their responses.

Don't try to do too many different things when you do meet up. Make time for just 3 and doing nothing. Marshall

Sometimes being apart really gets you down, and the only person who could make you feel better is a million miles away. It's OK to get emotional, it's OK to cry or get angry - just do whatever you need to do. It's so important not to keep your feelings inside. Your partner is the only person who really understands what you're going 4 , so never, never hide what you're feeling from them. Sarah

Don't forget to say good morning and goodnight to each other, every day without fail, even if you just send a quick text with a smiley face. We also have a regular 5 time to Skype every day, which we can both look forward to. Andy

We played online games 6 throughout the day, like Dominoes and Scrabble. It really helped to do something together when we couldn't talk to each other. You can also get an app that lets you watch shows on Netflix at exactly the same time, which made it feel more like we were together. Sandra

There may be people who don't believe your relationship will work, and that's OK, but you mustn't let what other people think 1 you, because you're the ones who are actually in the relationship. As long as you love each other and trust each other, and you think you can make the relationship work, then that's the only thing that matters. Eileen

I've been in a happy long-distance relationship for nearly two years. I find that it helps to think of it in the same way as trying to 2 a break-up: I focus on my work, I rely a lot on my friends, and keep myself busy in the evenings and at weekends, to try to avoid ever feeling lonely. Bruce

My husband gave me one of his sweatshirts to wear, and I gave him a ring of mine on a leather necklace that he could wear all the time to 7 him of me. It's really comforting to have a physical thing that belongs to them. Shawna

Talk to each other as often as you can, about everything, little things and big things. When you do have the chance to meet up, try to do 8 things together, like doing the food shopping, as well as exciting things like concerts or expensive meals out. Try to keep your lives as normal as possible. Jane

Try not to get into situations where you're in some kind of competition about who cares less or more, or who's happier or unhappier. If you're apart, you need to learn to live 9 each other. But you also need to appreciate how much happier you feel when you're together. If you find that you don't just need each other, you also want each other, that'll make your relationship stronger. Alan

Make sure you send your partner lots of photos of you. Maybe you think it's a bit self-centred, or maybe you really hate taking selfies, but they 10 want to look at your face! Owen

How to survive...
living with your parents

If you are among the quarter of young adults still living at home with Mum and Dad, read on!

Around a quarter of young adults in the UK are living with Mum and Dad, the highest number since records began in 1996. If you are one of them, these tips might help you to survive.

Do your share.

Don't let yourself go into 'child mode' just because it's the house you grew up in. Housework is just as tedious for your parents as for you. Do your share, or you lose the right to call yourself an adult.

Save, save, save.

The major advantage of living at home is the cost. Unless your parents are charging you full market-rate rent (in which case, surely, move out?), you should be able to save some money. If you're working, living at home, and not saving any, you aren't planning for the future at all. It won't end well.

Have an exit plan.

Know how, if not exactly when, you plan to leave. In the darker moments of parent-child cohabitation, when you see in your parents' behaviour a worrying image of the kind of person you might end up being, the knowledge that you have an escape plan will be the only thing that keeps you sane.

Go out. A lot.

Of course, you and your parents love each other very much, but that doesn't mean you like each other all the time. Frankly, if you've lived together all your life and you don't sometimes hate them, there's something wrong with you. So go out.

Get to know them.

This is as good a time as any to find out about your parents' past history. Learning to see them as individuals, and not just as people who are there solely to look after you both physically and emotionally, will make you a better person. It will also make it easier to forgive them when they irritate you beyond belief.

b Look at the headings below and remember the tips. Use your own words to explain them to B.

  • Do your share.
  • Save, save, save.
  • Have an exit plan.
  • Go out. A lot.
  • Get to know them.

The secret to...
living with adult children

If you are one of the many parents whose adult children have returned to the nest, read on!

Around a quarter of young adults in the UK are living with Mum and Dad, the highest number since records began in 1996. For parents who were expecting a bit of peace and quiet, it can be a difficult situation. Here are some tips to make living with your adult child a little easier.

Get things out in the open.

Whether they are returning after living away, or even if they've never left, you need to set rules about how you're going to live. It's your home. What you were happy to do for them ten years ago, and what you should be doing for them now, are very different. Don't be afraid of bringing up difficult subjects. Talk about money, and don't be afraid of charging them what you think is fair.

Give them space.

If you have the room, allocate them space in the kitchen, or even their own living area. Not to mention their own bedroom, which should not be shared with a sibling.

Don't do it all yourself.

Get them to do their share of the cleaning, washing, cooking - all of these can lead to resentment if the rules aren't established. Don't be a martyr; it's easy to feel like a housekeeper. Be flexible, and expect compromise from them, too.

Treat your child as an adult.

They will have their own life - friends, partners, late nights. But make sure that respect is returned. Don't put up with things that annoy you. You're not obliged to house their friends.

Focus on the positives.

Perhaps you'd forgotten that they love to cook. Or that it's great to come home to someone. Tell them you love them - they may be an adult, but they're still your child.

1. Your wi-fi isn't working.

I would ask a family member first, or I would look online using my phone's data.

2. You're worried about some symptoms you have.

I'd probably look online first just to see, but then I would tell my parents and we would contact a professional, like a doctor.

3. You want to know the best way to invest a sum of money you've inherited.

I would ask my parents for advice. They are adults and probably know more about this, or they would know a professional to ask.

4. Your two-year-old child wakes up a lot at night.

I'm a student, so I don't have a child. If I had to answer, I guess I would look online or ask my own parents.

5. You're having relationship problems because your partner travels a lot and you hardly ever see them.

I would talk to a close friend or maybe look for advice online on forums where other people share their experiences.
