Seven point one.

Part one.

When TV producer John Lloyd thought of a formula for a new quiz show, he decided to call it QI, which stands for quite interesting, and which is also IQ backwards.

It's a comedy quiz where panelists have to answer unusual general knowledge questions. And it is perhaps surprising that it's particularly popular among fifteen to twenty-five year olds.

Along with co-author John Mitchinson, Lloyd has since written a number of QI books, and these have also been incredibly successful.

Lloyd's basic principle is very simple. Everything you think you know is probably wrong, and everything is interesting.

The QI book of general ignorance, for example, poses two hundred forty questions, all of which reveal surprising answers.

So, we learn, for example, that you are more likely to be killed by an asteroid than by lightning, or that Julius Caesar was not in fact born by Caesarean section.

The popularity of these books proves Lloyd's other thesis, that human beings, and children in particular, are naturally curious and have a desire to learn.

And this, he believes, has several implications for education.

According to Lloyd and Mitchinson, there are two reasons why children, in spite of being curious, tend to do badly at school.

Firstly, even the best schools can take a fascinating subject, such as electricity or classical civilization, and make it boring, by turning it into facts which have to be learned by heart, and then regurgitated for exams.

Secondly, QI's popularity seems to prove that learning takes place most effectively when it's done voluntarily.

The same teenagers who will happily choose to read a QI book will often sit at the back of a geography class and go to sleep. Or, worse still, disrupt the rest of the class.

Seven point two.

Part two.

So how could we change our schools so that children would enjoy learning? What would a QI school be like? These are Lloyd and Mitchinson's basic suggestions.

The first principle is that education should be more play than work. The more learning involves things like storytelling and making things, the more interested children will become.

Secondly, they believe that the best people to control what children learn are the children themselves. Children should be encouraged to follow their curiosity. They will end up learning to read, for example, because they want to, in order to read about something they are interested in.

Thirdly, they argue that children should also be in control of when and how they learn. The QI school would not be compulsory, so pupils wouldn't have to go if they didn't want to. And there would be no exams. There would only be projects or goals that children set themselves with a teacher helping them. So a project could be something like making a film or building a chair.

Fourthly, there should never be theory without practice. You can't learn about vegetables and what kind of plants they are from books and pictures. You need to go and plant them and watch them grow.

The fifth and last point Lloyd and Mitchinson make is that there's no reason why school has to stop dead at seventeen or eighteen. The QI school would be a place where you would be able to carry on learning all your life, a mini university where the young and old could continue to find out about all the things they are naturally curious about.

QI - Everything you think you know is probably wrong...

1 In the last 90 years, 82 Americans have been killed in bear attacks. However, teddy bears, along with other toys, have been responsible for an average of 22 deaths each year. Teddy bears are particularly dangerous because of their small parts, like glass eyes, which can cause choking, making them much more deadly than any species of real bear.

2 Not Alsatians (German Shepherds) or Wolfhounds, which physically resemble wolves. Recent DNA analysis has confirmed that Pekingese, whose name comes from Peking, the former name for Beijing, are one of the oldest dog breeds, and the most genetically similar to wolves.

3 The reason that the Sun looks yellow to us is because the Earth's atmosphere scatters colours with a longer wavelength, like red, orange, and yellow, less easily. These wavelengths are what we see, which is why the Sun appears yellow. However, the real colour of the sun is white.

4 Ice cream was first developed into something resembling its current form by the Italian Giambattista della Porta in the 16th century. It is one of the most complex food products that you will ever consume, a thermodynamic miracle that contains all three states of matter, solid, liquid, and gas at the same time.

5 No, it wasn't Hannibal. Elephants played a critical role in several key battles in antiquity, and continued to be used in combat up till the 19th century in Thailand and Vietnam. The last recorded use of elephants in war occurred in 1987, when Iraq is alleged to have used them to transport heavy weapons during the Iran / Iraq war.

6 We all associate boomerangs with Australia. However, they were used in almost all continents in ancient times, and an Iron Age wooden boomerang was recently found in Holland. In fact, the world's oldest boomerang, made from the tusk of a mammoth, was found in a cave in Poland, in 1987.

7A QI QUIZ Student B

a Read the answers to questions 7-12 of the quiz on p.66.

b A will tell you the answers to 1-6. Then explain the answers to 7-12 to A in your own words.

QI - Everything you think you know is probably wrong...

7 In many people's minds, in London, it is permanently raining. However, other European cities primarily associated with sunshine have significantly higher annual rainfall than London, including Barcelona, and also Rome, which is the wettest of these three cities.

8 In the UK itself, the highest mountain is Ben Nevis, in Scotland, which is 1,345 metres high. But part of the Antarctic is a British territory, and its highest mountain, Mount Hope, measures 3,239 metres, making Ben Nevis seem like a mere hill.

9 Not football or rugby, but billiards. Billiards was so popular in the USA that during the American Civil War, billiards results received wider coverage than war news. The first World Championship was held in 1869.

10 The 1896 Summer Olympics, the first of the modern era, were held in Athens, with 14 participating nations. Winners were given a silver medal, because gold was considered too expensive, while runnersup received a copper one, and there was no medal for third place. This changed in the 1904 Olympics, in St Louis, USA, to the current gold, silver, and bronze.

11 Although it is named after Gustav Eiffel, he didn't design it himself. He owned an engineering company, and was inspired to build the tower after visiting the Latting Observatory in New York. But the tower was actually designed by two of his senior engineers, Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier.

12 According to a recent survey, hairdressers and beauticians have the most injuryprone jobs in Britain. The most common injury involved people cutting themselves. They are closely followed by electricians, plumbers, and police officers.
