The Highlands is a mountainous area in the north of Scotland. But the Highland Games do not only take place in Scottish towns and villages. They are also held in many other countries where Scottish people live. Today's games also attract a great number of visitors.

The Highland Games have a very interesting history. It is believed that in the 11th century Scottish King Malcolm ordered to organize a contest in the village called Braemar. The idea was to find the fastest and the strongest men in his country. He needed strong people to be his bodyguards and fast people to be his messengers. That was the beginning of the games. The tradition is still kept.

Nowadays the games are held to celebrate Scottish culture. That atmosphere at the Highland Games is wonderful. Visitors can meet Scottish people, learn something about Scottish history, listen to Scottish music, watch Scottish dancing and enjoy the traditional food.

Like the Olympics, the Highland Games open and close with impressive ceremonies. Sports competitions at the Highland Games are very unusual. Probably one of the most impressive events is the tossing of caber.¹ A caber is a log of 5 metres long which weighs about 45 kg. The athlete holds the caber by one end and tries to throw it so that it lands on the other end and then falls away from the thrower. There are also competitions in hammer throwing, stone putting (throwing), tug of war (rope pulling), as well as running and jumping.

Entertainment at the games include bagpipe competitions, bands playing Scottish folk songs and competitions in Scottish dancing. When pipers play music on the bagpipes, they blow air into a bag which they hold under their arms and press the air into the other pipes, so the loud music never stops. Scottish dancing is very quick and often cheerful. For example,

Highland fling is a dance of happiness and joy. It is the oldest of the Scottish dances, dating back to the eleventh century. Sword dance is not like fling: it is a war dance. The performers dance it among crossed swords and have to be very careful not to touch them. In the past it was believed that if a dancer touched a sword as he danced, he would be wounded or killed in battle.

Visitors to the games usually enjoy the colourful Parade of Tartans. During the parade the members of each clan are announced to visitors as they march together around the parade field. Every highlander is a member of one of the big families, or clans, of Scotland. All the people of one clan have the same surname and wear the same tartan. They look extremely picturesque in their Highland dress — the traditional costume worn by Scottish men on important occasions. Its main parts are a tartan kilt (a man’s skirt), a sporran (a flat bag made of fur or leather hanging in front of the kilt), and a small knife which is put in the top of one of the stockings.
