Last year, I was in Japan for an exchange trip. In Japan they have several earthquakes a year, so when we arrived at the school they taught us what to do in case of an emergency. They told us that if we feel the earth shaking the first thing we should do is get underneath a table or a door frame. This helps protect you from falling rubble. Then the best thing to do is wait for the emergency services and hope that no one gets hurt!

I spent several years studying wildlife in South Asia and while I was there I made an amazing discovery regarding tsunamis, that has helped me ever since to know when one will happen. It was one of the most terrifying experiences in my life. One day I noticed that all the birds and monkeys were running away from the sea towards the mountain. Minutes later a huge wave crashed into the beach! After the panic, I realised that they had known about the tsunami before any of the humans did!

I live in a small village in England which is normally very safe! But this year something really scary happened! I was sitting in the garden when I suddenly saw a large spinning column of clouds come out of the sky. It moved quickly across the land. It destroyed some small buildings and damaged some trees before it stopped. I have never been more scared in my life! No one in my family was hurt but our neighbour got knocked over by the wind and broke his leg.

Well, I was watching the news the other day and I saw this terrible news story about the earthquake in Italy. I thought about all the people who were hurt in the disaster and also about their friends and family who didn't know whether they were safe or not. I knew that there must be something that I could do, so I decided to collect money to assist the people in Italy who had been hurt or lost their homes.

I got on the train this morning to go to school. It's a 30 minute journey and I was bored so I was reading the safety information leaflet. Suddenly, there was a huge crash and we all fell out of our seats. The train had derailed and it was now lying on its side. Luckily, everyone was OK and unharmed and the emergency services quickly arrived to get everyone out of the train. The first thing I did was call my family to say I was OK!
