Listen to an interview with a British teenager and answer the questions in your workbook.

A teenager talking.

Interviewer: Hi Frank, thanks for coming. We would like to get a snapshot of teenage Britain and to see if it is more or less the same all over Europe.

Frank: Okay, fire away. I'm ready to answer your questions.

Interviewer: Where are you from and how old are you?

Frank: I'm sixteen and I'm from Cardiff, the capital city of Wales.

Interviewer: Do you go to school? If yes, what kind of school is it? What do you think of it?

Frank: I attend a secondary comprehensive school, which I believe is fairly good and it prepares for our future life and work. Our teachers tell us we should get through our school days driven by a burning intellectual curiosity. Some of us follow the advice, but there are pupils who leave school with no qualifications. They say three hundred thousand teenagers of the country.

Interviewer: What's the typical way of communication for you?

Frank: I have a mobile phone. Practically all my friends have them. Then I regularly surf the net. My friends and me were happy to give out our email addresses on the internet. But some of my schoolmates use the internet mainly to help with their homework.

Interviewer: What about your contact with parents?

Frank: I trust my mom and dad more than my authority, but sometimes they can be difficult. I hate it when they try to talk to me when I'm in a bad mood. At times they treat me as a child and I'm certain they don't want me to grow up. But they're quite attentive to my opinions in most cases and my views seldom go unheard or unrecognized. In fact, I think my family is a strong unit and it's definitely my foundation. But I know that for many teens it's different.

Interviewer: In a recent survey, seventeen year old girls were asked what helped them feel confident, sure of themselves.

Frank: The results show that for many of them, their jeans or their clothes are more important than their friends. But they're girls. My friends are very important for me. At home I often shut the door of my room and talk to my friends on mobile. We usually listen to music together. We get most of our homework done at school and have a lot of time to hang out.
