Teaching Teens Life Skills

Teaching teens life skills is very important. Everybody understands that children should develop into responsible adults. Life skills are those skills that people need to do on a regular basis. In our life we all pay bills, keep a check book, do cooking, shopping and cleaning. The best way to learn how to do it is by doing these things.

Some parents teach their kids responsibility by making them do house chores, even asking for their advice in certain situations. The teens are taught to vacuum rooms, wash clothes etc and many of them do such things regularly. In some families children should help to cook family dinners and some mothers ask their sons and daughters to prepare a family dinner once a week.

As soon as the teen is old enough, some parents help them to get a part-time job. Mothers and fathers usually know what their kids are interested in as a possible future career, and may help to find some job for young people in the sphere of their interests. For instance, if the teen wants to be a vet, the parents may help them to look for a job at a vet’s office or a pet store.

In many families parents go over a budget with the teen and teach them how to pay bills. They often do the shopping together and explain to the young people how to use coupons and take advantage of sales. Sometimes the teens are asked to use their own money for this. If they use their parents’ money, they usually do not care as much about saving. It’s different when the money is their own. It is necessary to teach teens about their responsibilities. Older kids should help the families with the younger ones. In good families teens are taught to babysit. Thus they know how to feed, dress, diaper¹ and bathe a baby or a small child. Even boys are encouraged to do these things at least once or twice.
