A. School uniform protests

On the 10th of October the students boycotted the first lesson at Trinity College [CG] at Royal Lemington Spa [CG]. Traditionally, the dress code at school allowed students to wear everyday clothes and they protested over the idea to introduce a uniform. In spring a survey was organised and students voted against the idea to introduce a compulsory uniform. But the school authorities decided to go ahead ignoring their opinion and all parents were informed about the decision. One of the girls said, “The unique atmosphere of the school will disappear. It will take away our individuality.” The other students agreed with her and said that a lot of parents and teachers supported them, “The survey showed that we didn’t want a uniform but they didn’t want to hear us.” The head teacher had another opinion, she said that a uniform wouldn’t supress students’ individuality but would prevent them from wearing clothes unsuitable for school.

B. We want dress code!

In September a dress code was introduced at Wilma Comprehensive School [CG] in Wheldrake, York [CG]. The results of the survey proved that most parents were in favour of the idea and, what is more, students backed the uniform too: two thirds of them voted for it.

As a result, all 800 students from 6 to 17 wear a new uniform with a school logo: a T-shirt or a polo-shirt. As for jackets, shoes and trousers students can wear what they like, even jeans are allowed. They just have to remember two things: plain colours are recommended and brand names should be avoided.

Why do they want a dress code? The head teacher explained that a lot of parents couldn’t afford to buy trendy clothes their children wanted and some students were bullied about clothes they wore. So, the school decided that a uniform might be a good idea and it would help to solve the problem.
