5 Work in pairs. Do you think the guests' gossip about Gatsby is true? Why?/Why not?
THE GREAT GATSBY
BY F. SCOTT FITZGERALD
The story takes place in the USA ofthe 1920s. Nick Carraway, the narrator,is a young graduate who has movedto New York to work on Wall Street. He was in the army in World War One. He rents a small house in West Egg,an exclusive area of Long Island. He’ssingle but has a busy social life, andhe spends a lot of time with Tom, anold college friend, and his beautifulwife Daisy, who live nearby. Everyonehas a lot of money and spends most oftheir time going to parties.
Nick has never met his neighbour, JayGatsby, a lonely millionaire. Gatsby isfamous for his extravagant and verypopular parties at his luxury home, buthe is also the subject of much gossipabout his past. One day, Nick receivesan invitation to Gatsby’s next party ...
I believe that on the first night I went toGatsby’s house I was one of the few guestswho had actually been invited. People werenot invited – they just went there. Sometimes they came and went withoutmeeting Gatsby at all.
When I arrived, the garden was already fullof music and laughter. I tried to look forGatsby, but nobody knew where he was. Finally I found a familiar face – JordanBaker, a friend of Daisy’s. She was talkingto a group of guests who I didn’t know.‘Have you been to Gatsby’s partiesbefore?’ Jordan asked the girl beside her.‘The last one was the one I met you at,’answered the girl, in a confident voice.‘When I was here last, I tore my dress ona chair,’ said another girl, ‘and he took myname and address – and I got a packagefrom Croirier’s with a new evening dressin it. It cost two hundred and sixty-fivedollars!’‘There’s something funny about a guythat’ll do a thing like that,’ said the othergirl. ‘He doesn’t want any trouble withANYbody.’‘Who doesn’t?’ I asked.‘Gatsby. Somebody told me ...’Everyone leaned forward to listen.‘Somebody told me they thought he killeda man once.’‘Well I heard he was a German spy duringthe war.’One of the men nodded.‘I heard that from a man who grew upwith him in Germany,’ he said. We all turned and looked around forGatsby. But he wasn’t there.
After supper Jordan and I went to look forGatsby inside the house. In the library a fat,middle-aged man, with enormous glasses, was sitting at a huge table, staring at theshelves of books. He was a little drunk.‘What do you think?’ he asked us, excited.‘About what?’He waved his hand at the bookshelves.‘About that. They’re real.’‘The books?’He nodded.‘I thought they were just for show. Butthey have pages and everything.’
THE GREAT
GATSBY
BY F. SCOTT FITZGERALD
We went back into the garden. The moon washigh in the sky. A famous opera singer sang inItalian, some actors played a funny scene andthen a jazz band started playing. People weredancing now. Champagne was being served inhuge glasses and the air was full of conversationand laughter. We sat at a table with a man ofabout my age and a little girl who giggled everytime someone spoke. The man looked at meand smiled.‘I know your face,’ he said, politely. ‘Aren’tyou in the Third Division during the war?’‘Why, yes. I was in the Ninth Battalion.’‘I was in the Seventh Infantry. I knew I’d seenyou somewhere before.’We talked for a moment about some wet, greylittle villages in France.‘Having a nice time now?’ Jordan asked me.‘Much better.’ I turned again to my newacquaintance. ‘This is an unusual party for me. I haven’t even seen the host. He sent over hischauffeur with an invitation – and I only livenext door!’ For a moment he looked at me as ifhe didn’t understand.‘I’m Gatsby,’ he said suddenly. ‘I thought youknew. I’m afraid I’m not a very good host.’He smiled again. It was a smile that you mightcome across maybe four or five times in your
life – a smile that understood you as youwanted to be understood. It made me trust himimmediately.
Gatsby left us to answer a phone call fromChicago.
I told Jordan that I had expected Gatsby to bedifferent – older, fatter, red-faced.‘Who is he? Do you know?’ I asked Jordan.‘He’s just a man named Gatsby ...’ sheanswered coolly.‘Where is he from, I mean? And what does hedo?’ I asked her again.‘Well, he told me once he was an Oxford man. I don’t believe it, though.’There was something very mysterious aboutGatsby’s story – how had someone so youngappeared from nowhere and bought sucha grand house in West Egg? I suddenly noticedGatsby again – he was standing alone on thesteps, smiling at the lively scene below him. Looking at his tidy hair and his smooth, tannedskin it was difficult to see anything suspiciousabout him. A band started playing and peoplestarted singing. Girls rested their heads on theirpartners’ shoulders. But no one rested theirhead on Gatsby’s shoulder.

5 Поработайте в парах. Как вы думаете, слухи гостей о Гэтсби правдивы? Почему/Почему нет?
Ответ:
No, I don't think the guests' gossip is true. One of the rumors is that Gatsby was a German spy during the war. However, in the text, Gatsby tells Nick that he was in the Seventh Infantry of the American army, and they realize they fought in the same division. This proves he wasn't a spy. Also, the narrator describes Gatsby's smile as very trustworthy, which makes the other rumor about him killing a man seem unlikely.
