Unit three.

In harmony with nature.

Number five. Listen to six people and match what they say A to F with the statements one to seven in your workbook. There is one statement you don't need to use.

Speaker A: High in the Himalayas of China, live gentle animals called the giant panda. Pandas live in forests, where bamboo is their main source of food. For a long time, when bamboo was plentiful, pandas felt healthy and strong. Then bamboo began to disappear and many pandas died. Without enough bamboo to eat, the giant panda can become extinct. Their number is not so big as it is.

Speaker B: Thousands of marine animals, like seals and dolphins, are in danger. It's people who are the biggest danger to them. Scientists and volunteers try to help these animals and give them official protection. In Cornwall, along the coast, there are special places where seals and other marine animals feel safe.

Speaker C: There are more than six hundred active volcanoes on Earth. Indonesia alone has about one hundred and sixty, and Iceland has about two hundred. On average, between twenty to thirty volcanoes erupt each year. Volcanoes are well known for the destruction they cause. When in sixteen sixty nine Etna in Italy erupted, twenty thousand people were killed. There are many other tragic examples in history. Some volcanoes can be quiet for a long time, but then they may erupt again. They are often described as dormant. Nevertheless, they are also dangerous.

Speaker D: Cars cause the most pollution in our environment. There are millions of cars in America alone. We can help the environment riding bikes. To see how dangerous cars are, do the following: Get an old, white sock and put it over the exhaust pipe of the car. The car must be cold. Then ask somebody to start the car and after one minute stop it again. When you look at the sock, you'll see that it is no longer white. Think about the pollution from millions of cars every day.

Speaker E: Nature is everything that exists in the world around us. At the beginning of their development, man was very dependent on nature, but with time, getting more knowledgeable, people began to conquer nature trying to solve its mysteries. New discoveries and inventions, new technologies make a dramatic impact on the planet. As a result, our life has become more comfortable in many ways, but progress has been harmful to the environment. Nowadays, the human race should protect mother nature.

Speaker F: Nowadays people understand how dangerous pollution is and try to find various ways out. Everybody wants to stop pollution and save the world, but not many people know how to do it. Some of them think we should plant millions of trees and use alternative energy in our houses. In my opinion, we should try to save energy, recycle paper and other materials, and stop polluting the planet completely.
