Unit Four.

Mysteries.

Track Twenty-Five.

On the seventh of April, two thousand five, police stopped a young man in his early twenties, who was walking around the streets of Sheerness, a seaside town in Southeast England. He was wearing a suit and a tie, but his clothes were soaking wet. The labels had been taken off the man's clothes, and he didn't have a passport or any other possessions.

Officer One: He seems very frightened.

Officer One: He could be an illegal immigrant.

Officer Two: Or he might have been the victim of a crime.

Officer Two: Can you show us some identification, sir? A passport? A driving license?

Officer One: He's obviously too shocked to speak.

Officer Two: No wonder. The poor guy's soaking wet. He must have been in the sea for a long time.

The police took the man to the local hospital. At the hospital, the police officers and doctors questioned the man, hoping to find out who he was and where he came from.

Officer One: Where do you come from? France? Russia?

Officer Two: Let's give him a map. Perhaps that will help.

Officer One: He's pointing at Oslo. He must come from Norway.

A ship from Norway had been in the area at the time. The hospital arranged for a speaker of Norwegian to come to the hospital. But the man didn't seem to understand any Norwegian.

Officer One: Well, that was a waste of time. He can't be Norwegian. He didn't understand a word.

Officer Two: Perhaps if we give him a pen and paper, he'll write his name.

Officer One: Good idea.

Officer Two: Can you write your name for us, sir?

Officer One: He can't have understood.

Officer Two: Wait a minute. He's drawing something.

The man had drawn a picture of a piano. Excited, the staff took him to the hospital chapel, where there was a piano. The man suddenly became energetic and began to play. Apparently, the people who heard him were amazed.

Soon newspapers and TV stations across the world carried stories of The Piano Man, the brilliant pianist who had lost his memory and whose identity was a complete mystery.

Tonight at ten on I B C three, we investigate why the story of The Piano Man is still a mystery one year later.
