The Time of Queen Victoria in Britain

Queen Victoria (1819—1901), Queen of Great Britain and Ire- land, Empress of India, was the monarch who ruled for the longest period in British history. During her reign Britain's in- dustry developed and there was an increase in the popularity of the monarchy. At the same time there appeared a great number of people in the country who were on the breadline. Young children from poor families had to work many hours at plants and factories. The living conditions in poor families were awful, that's why there were so many deaths among children and babies. People often speak about Victorian moral standards meaning that it was appropriate to be or to look very respectable, reli- gious and well-behaved. Unfortunately, it didn't always work.
