Russians take great pride in their art and there are many treasure houses of Russian fine art all over the country.

Spotlight on Russia takes a closer look at the Tretyakov Gallery.

The Tretyakov Gallery is in Moscow not far from the Kremlin and it is the national treasury of Russian fine art. The Moscow merchant and industrialist Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov (1832-1898) founded the museum in 1856 by starting a collection of works of art by artists of his day. He presented his collection to the city in 1892.

Today, all the art inside the gallery, which includes more than 180,000 works, is by Russian artists who have made a contribution to the history of Russian art. Artworks from the 11th to the early 20th century are displayed in one building on Lavrushinskiy Pereulok and the more modern works including many by post-war avant-garde artists are in a new building on Krymskiy Val.

The Lavrushinskiy Pereulok site has 62 rooms filled with art. It has an amazing collection of Russian art including many famous paintings by Isaac Levitan such as the masterpiece "March". There is also the Engraving Room which has an impressive collection of engravings including the Rovinsky Collection, the Mosolov Collection and many others which used to belong to Russian nobles and the royal family. The museum also houses a large collection of ancient, medieval, Russian and Soviet coins, medals, plaques and banknotes.

The gallery on Krymskiy Val is also called the House of Artists. Here you can see a fine collection of early modern art – including Malevich's "Black Square" and Kandinsky's "Composition VII".

1. Yes, I like art. It's really interesting to look at paintings. My favourite artist is probably Vincent van Gogh. His "Starry Night" is amazing! (Да, мне нравится искусство. Очень интересно разглядывать картины. Мой любимый художник, наверное, Винсент Ван Гог. Его «Звездная ночь» — это что-то невероятное!)

2. I like impressionism. The paintings are so bright and full of life. I like how the artists used small brush strokes to show light and movement. It's like they captured a quick moment in time. (Мне нравится импрессионизм. Картины такие яркие и живые. Мне нравится, как художники использовали маленькие мазки, чтобы показать свет и движение. Кажется, будто они запечатлели короткий миг.)

3. If I could create any kind of art, I would probably make sculptures. I think it would be cool to create something three-dimensional that people can walk around and look at from all sides. Maybe I would make sculptures of animals out of metal. (Если бы я мог создавать любое произведение искусства, я бы, наверное, делал скульптуры.
